Pepper and Salt Skipper

Pepper and Salt Skipper is uncommon to locally common north of the Fall Line. There is one flight from late March (March 24) to late May (May 28) in the Piedmont, mid-April (April 11 to late May (May 24) in the Mountains and Ridge and Valley. Some few individuals may linger into June or early July in the Mountains. The habitat is streamsides and openings in rich deciduous forests and wet meadows but also drier mixed forest such as on Kennesaw Mountain (Cobb County), Blood Mountain (Union County) and Fort Mountain (Murray County). The largest numbers occur along streams in the more northerly counties. The hostplants are River Oats (Chasmanthium [Unifola] latifolia) and Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans). Early Date: 24 March (Douglas County); Late Date: 28 May (Coweta County). Conservation Status: Secure.
