Least Skipper
Ancyloxypha numitor

Least Skipper is a small, light-orange butterfly with rounded wings. Males patrol for females in, or just above, thick stands of tall grasses, perching occasionally and briefly. It is locally common statewide in moist or wet open places with tall grasses, along trails though swamps or wetlands, and in marshy places or wet fields. The hostplants are Marsh Millet (Zizaniopsis miliacea) and Rice Cutgrass (Leersia oryzoides), grasses that occur statewide. They also use Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica), an invasive that is not present statewide. There are two broods, except on the Coast where there may be three broods, from April to November. Early date: April 1 (Early County); Late Date: November 1 (Chatham County). Conservation Status: Secure.
