#1 Dusted Skipper, male, Bartow Co, 10 Apr 2012.JPG

Dusted Skipper
Atrytonopsis hianna

Dusted Skipper is rare and local statewide. Colonies appear when habitat conditions are favorable and then disappear when the habitat changes. The preferred habitat is open to bare places in pine forest or mixed forest with a good stand of the hostplant, Andropogon spp. A typical site in Bartow County was a two acre plot where a logging operation had completely cleared the ground and where small, low-growing plants had sprouted, including Andropogon. There is one brood from early April to mid-May (April 5-May 11 in Bartow County). Early Date: April 5 (Bartow County); Late Date: May 16 (Murray County). Conservation Status: Threatened. Colonies should be protected.
