Dusky Azure
Celastrina nigra

Dusky Azure is a rare inhabitant of north-facing slopes at the higher elevations in the Blue Ridge Mountain counties and is known from only a few locations. It was recently found in Walker County in the Ridge and Valley section, which suggests that it may be present in all the northern counties along the NC/TN line. The hostplant is goat’s beard (Aruncus dioicus) which grows in moist coves. There is one brood from the second week in April to mid-May. It is necessary to see the dorsal side for accurate identification. The male has a slate gray dorsal side and the female dorsal has broad dark borders on all four wings. Early Date: April 16 (Union County); Late Date: May 1 (Rabun County) (based on only a few sightings) Conservation Status: Secure but rare.
